02/18/2008

Emmitsburg, Md. -- Mount St. Mary’s freshman Shawn Atupem (Newport, News, Va./Woodside) has been named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week. Atupem averaged 11.5 points and 3.0 rebounds while hitting 62.5 percent from the floor in helping lead the Mount to wins over Fairleigh Dickinson and Quinnipiac.

A 6-7 forward, Atupem opened the week with a career-high 17-point effort at Fairleigh Dickinson. He scored 10 consecutive points to cap a 12-0 first-half run that allowed the Mount to take control of the game. He followed with six points on 3-of-5 shooting in the Mount’s 77-70 win over Quinnipiac. His shot in the lane with 2:58 remaining gave the Mount a five-point advantage after the Bobcats had cut the margin to three.

Atupem, whose brother and teammate Sam was a two-time Choice Hotels NEC Rookie of the Week award winner in 2005-06, has averaged 8.5 points and 3.8 rebounds over the last six contests. In that stretch, he has hit 20-of-30 (.667) from the field and is averaging 17.5 minutes per game. Atupem has scored 51 points over the past six games after tallying 24 over the first 16 games of his career.

During head coach Milan Brown’s five-year tenure, the Mount has earned 11 NEC Rookie of the Week awards.
